Michael Ormiston is the UK’s most experienced Mongolian Khöömii (Overtone) Singer, a

multi-instrumentalist, composer, inspirational teacher, workshop leader and therapeutic sound practitioner.

He travelled to west Mongolia in 1993 to study Khöömii with herdsman and expert singer Tserendavaa. During his six times in Mongolia he also studied with leading singers, Tsengedorj, Ganbold, Gereltsolt and Tsogtbaatar and has the rare privilege of being blessed to teach Khöömii by Tserendavaa and Gereltsogt which he has been doing internationally for the past 20 years.

He has taught Khöömii on the SOAS World music summer school for the past 14 years as well as individually teaching ethnomusicology students at SOAS, Goldsmith College, University of London & ADEM Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie Geneva. In 2011, Michael in conjunction with SOAS and The Embassy of Mongolia organised, lectured and performed at the Inaugural European Mongolian Khöömii Festival in London.

He wrote, researched & presented “Echoes from Blue Heaven” a two part BBC Radio programme about traditional Mongolian Music and “The Whispering of the Stars”, the first major series (6 part) of radio programmes about Siberian Music for BBC Radio3. In 1994 he organised in conjunction with the Mongolian Government a 1500km musical tour of Mongolia with his group Nada and was invited to Mongolia in 2006 to perform with Mongolian Musicians at the 800 anniversary celebrations of Chinggis Khan’s declaration of the Mongol Empire.

In 2015 he was awarded the Artists International Development Fund by the Art Council England & The British Council to travel to Kyrgyzstan to perform & Collaborate with musicians & artists.

He was honoured to perform in the presence of H.H. The Dalai Lama, Khamba Lam Choijamts (The Head Abbot of Ganden Monastery, Ulaanbataar), HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and Ban Ki-moon amongst others.

In 2011 Michael was awarded The International Outreach Award by the Mongolian Embassy UK,

The Mongolian Association in the UK and Lingua Global for his

special contribution to the promotion of Mongolia’s rich Cultural Heritage.

Michael’s Overtones, instruments & Compositions have been heard on ‘The Golden Compass’ Hollywood film, Planet Earth, BBC’s acclaimed TV series, ITV’s Beowulf, The Old Vic’s production of The Crucible, Channnel 4, BBC Radio, Theatre De Complicite, Balled Frankfurt and many other performance pieces.

He has released many CDs with Candida Valentino who also studied with Tserendavaa in Mongolia.

Michael has a rare collection of Mongolian instruments including the Morin Khuur, Tobshuur, Tömör Khuur, Khulsan Khuur, Limbe, Yatag, Tsuur. Among the other instruments he plays are, Tibetan Singing Bowls, Symphonic Gongs, Saz (Turkish long necked lute), Flat backed Bouzouki, Ney (Turkish end blown flute), Jew’s harps, Kyl Kyiak, Live electronics……

He organised & performed his musical group, Nada a tour of Mongolia in 1994.

This was the first British group to tour the provinces of Mongolia.

Michael has performed with his rare collection of instruments around the world including, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, India, Algeria, Sri Lanka, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, at the Montreux Jazz festival (Switzerland), The National Theatre (London), The Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), with members of Ballet Frankfurt (Germany), The Eden Project (Cornwall) and Glastonbury International Dance Festival with Spiral Arts Dance Theatre, Belfast (Northern Ireland) for H.H. The Dalai Lama, and in New York.
